Welcome to Third Grade!

Mr. Mark Third Grade Schedule

It is the purpose of this page to advise parents on what is happening in the school and classroom, and to provide resources to assist with the learning process. First time here? Read my bio.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at rmark@kingstonhill.org. During the summer you can call 783-8282 to leave a message to be forwarded to me.

A message from the Kind Hands Action Committee: We want to thank everyone in our school community for joining us in support of the Jonnycake Center. Often times people remember to help others around the holidays, but forget that the entire winter can be difficult for those in need. Thank you for proving that KHA cares about our community and takes action to make life better for others. Boxes full of cans and clothes!

Most of these packed boxes have hundreds upon hundreds of folded clothes, cans, toiletries and household items. The response from our community was absolutely phenomenal!

Trimester 2 Project Rubric

Activity Sheet: From Information to Sentences

Science Science Kits from the East Bay Collaborative

During the first trimester, students learn through the Water science kit. Next to the air we breathe, water is probably the most important thing in our lives. Without water, all life would cease. The Water Module consists of four activities in which the students will explore properties of water, changes in water, density, surface tension and interactions between water and other earth materials.

During the second trimester, students are exposed to the hands-on science kit Sound and Light Energy. Topics covered include how light and sound travel, how the human ear and eye work, and some characteristics of each sense. Students are taught about both forms of energy and how light and sound share many properties. Sound and light can both be described as waves, both have frequencies, and can both be reflected, bent or absorbed. Students discover that our ears and eyes can be damaged by overexposure to strong sounds and UV light, respectively.

Third trimester science is an in-depth examination of "Structures of Life." The structure of any plant or animal is the way it is organized, and the function is the purpose that each structure possesses to support life. We will continue to study the importance of claims and evidence. For each seed, plant or crayfish we will determine the function of multiple structures within our science study. Learning can be both effective and fun with hard work and focus!

Social Studies and Social Skills

Social Studies States Practice: http://yourchildlearns.com/mappuzzle/us-puzzle.html

In third grade we examine communities, geography, and government. As part of student learning, we utilize the textbooks of “Share Our World,” a third grade social studies program. The lessons throughout the year will focus on comparing and contrasting different aspects of communities, such as resources, jobs, culture, climate, and government.

In addition, we have been learning about what it means to be a kind friend and a respectful classmate. Through literature and current issues, we are able to address social situations in our classroom discussions. Another major component of development of social skills is a focus on impulse control and conflict resolution.

We Love Reading!

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis, is a delightful adventure story that acts as a springboard for discussions about trust, making good choices, and understanding how the way you act is far more important than the way you look.

 Charlotte's Web

Charlotte's Web, by E.B. White, is a tale about friendship, life, sadness, and hope.

MatildaMatilda, by Roald Dahl, is an excellent story about a student that finds positivity and success even with the greatest of challenges.

Muggie Maggie, by Beverly Cleary, is an entertaining realistic fiction book about a third grader who struggles with cursive writing.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a classic children’s novel by Roald Dahl.  Through Charlie Bucket, the book examines the hardship of poverty and the strength of family.  This entertaining story also demonstrates what can go wrong when parents and children make poor choices in life.

Make Learning Happen!

Be safe. Be kind. Be respectful. Be responsible.

Make good choices and try your best!

Please note that for the Mr. Mark’s class, there are no required materials for third grade. This decision is meant to avoid any financial burden that may arise for families. We will supply all materials needed for classroom use and instruction.

However, students may bring in pencils, color pencils, dry erase markers or pocket-sized hand sanitizer. These supplies may be for personal use and/or a donation for the class. Thank you!
