4. Work on your 1st Trimester Project (see below).

What an amazing, wonderful, and impressive job this class has done!  It was easily apparent that students, with a little help from families, worked meticulously to achieve expectations for this project.  Excellent job!

The Third Grade State Project

  • Poster includes the student name and state.
  • Student has typed or written all sentences on their own.
  • The spelling on the poster is correct.
  • There is an entertaining beginning in the introduction.
  • Geography, Climate, Population, State Symbols and Interesting Facts are included in the poster.
  • Each of the five sections has at least three full sentences.
  • The poster includes a drawing or picture of the state.
  • You are responsible for most of the work for your state project. However, adults in your family may help you go to the library, search the internet, help you understand information, or identify spelling that you might have to fix. Just make sure to ask them politely and thank them at the end! Mr. Mark expects you to meet all of these expectations.

We Love Reading!

Muggie Maggie, by Beverly Cleary, is an entertaining realistic fiction book about a third grader who struggles with cursive writing.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis, is a delightful adventure story that acts as a springboard for discussions about trust, making good choices, and understanding how the way you act is far more important than the way you look.

Suggested reading:

Charlotte's Web

Charlotte's Web, by E.B. White, is a tale about friendship, sadness, and hope.

Matilda

Matilda, by Roald Dahl, is an excellent story about a student that finds positivity and success even with the greatest of challenges.

Our Classroom

Writing

KHA has adopted the Empowering Writers Program. Students receive lessons targeting organization, entertaining beginnings, elaborative detail, suspense, effective main events, and satisfying endings. Each skill has been modeled, then practiced with guidance, and then practiced independently. Writing with an appreciation for tone shall be addressed, such as writing in a science journal or writing a persuasive essay. In addition, students practice letter formation in cursive writing on a daily level.

The Daily Five for Literacy

  • Read by Yourself
  • Read to Someone
  • Work on Writing (Writer's Workshop)
  • Listen to Reading
  • Word Work (Spelling)

Math Resources

Visit www.thinkcentral.com for math enrichment. When you get to the website, enter "Rhode Island," "State Operated School," and "Kingston Hill Academy." Your username is the first letter in your first name followed by your last name, and your password is "password." Enjoy the practice with fractions, charts, or area and perimeter!

Science Kits from the East Bay Collaborative

During the first trimester, students will learn through the Water science kit. Next to the air we breathe, water is probably the most important thing in our lives. Without water, all life would cease. The Water Module consists of four activities in which the students will explore properties of water, changes in water, density, surface tension and interactions between water and other earth materials.

Next trimester, students will be exposed to the hands-on science kit Sound and Light Energy. Topics to be covered will include how light and sound travel, how the human ear and eye work, and some characteristics of each sense. Students will be taught about both forms of energy and how light and sound share many properties. Sound and light can both be described as waves, both have frequencies, and can both be reflected, bent or absorbed. Students will discover that our eyes and ears can be damaged by overexposure to strong sounds or UV light.

Social Studies and Social Skills

In third grade we examine communities, geography, and government. As part of student learning, we utilize the textbooks of “Share Our World,” a third grade social studies program. The lessons throughout the year will focus on comparing and contrasting different aspects of communities, such as resources, jobs, culture, climate, and government.

In addition, we have been learning about what it means to be a good friend and a respectful classmate. Through literature and current issues, we are able to address social situations in our classroom discussions. Another major component of development of social skills is a focus on impulse control and conflict resolution.
