 SECOND FIELD TRIP ANNOUNCEMENT:

On Wednesday, February 29 both first grade classrooms will be going to the Providence Children's Museum!  Permission slips have been sent home. 

This museum has been built with children in mind.  Hands on exhibits include Play Power, Water Ways, Underland, I-Way, Shape Space, Coming to Rhode Island, and many more.  We will also be going to a specially designed class titled Geomazing!  It will be a perfect start to our unit on geometry.  Read the description below to find out more this special class.

Geomazing

Squares, triangles, and trapezoids take center stage as students explore the angles of geometry. With mirrors and pattern blocks, students observe, predict and experiment with the principles of symmetry.

We are sure to have a geo-mazing time! :)

Literacy:

  • Theme: Nature's Resources
  • New Theme: From Mountain to Ocean
  • Centers with Leveled Reading Groups
  • Vocabulary this week:  mountain, slope, cover
  • Weekly Objectives:
    • Theme 9 Assessment 
    • Comprehension strategy - ask questions
    • Genre study - Personal Narrative
    • Idenitfy genre

Math:

  • Unit 3:  Graphs, Probability, and Numbers to 100.
  • Chapter 11: Comparing and Ordering Numbers to 100
  • Chapter 12: Number Patterns
  • Vocabulary:  is greater than, >, is less than, <, is equal to, =, number line, table, hundreds chart, before, after, in between
  • Weekly Objectives:
    • Use a number line to determine before, in between, and after.
    • Order numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least.
    • Solve problems using the strategy - use a table.
    • Review Chapter 11 - Chapter 11 Assessment on Thursday
    • Coutn forward and backward to 120.

Writing:

  • Weekly Objectives
    • Weekly focus -  Editing
    • Review - Identify  when to use a capital.
    • Review - End sentences with punctuation.
    • Use editing amrks to edit writing
    • Write final draft of Meteorologist piece to be displayed in class.

Science:

  • Unit: Air and Weather
  • Vocabulary: air, wind, weather, meteorologist, percipitation
  • BIG Ideas this week:
    • A meteorologist studies the weather.
    • Weather includes the temperature, percipitation, and wind speed.
    • Wind is moving air.
    • Wind moves in all directions.

Social Studies:

  • New Theme: People of the World
  • Finish Conitinent: Europe
  • Objectives this week:
    • Review Asia and complete continent exit page
    • Introduction to new continent - Europe
    • Identify Europe on a World Map
    • Color code a map of Europe and identify some countries in Europe.

       

Book Recommendations 

 

Book:  The Cat who Walked Across France

Author: Kate Banks and Georg Hallensleben

Description:  Describes a cat's journey across France to return to his seaside home.  This book features richly colored paintings of a variety of scenes in France, from the countryside, through Paris, ending at a house by the Mediterranean Sea.
