The last homework assignment for the students is to draw a picture and write about a favorite memory of first grade.  They should not only explain their favorite memory, but also explain why they enjoyed it and what they liked about it.  The paper will will be coming home with them on Friday.  Please let me know if you need another copy.

Books We Are Reading

I'm so sad it is June! I am really going to miss this class. This month we will be reading about fairy tales and fables, because we did not get to it much in May. We will also be reading to learn more sign language. The kids have been using sign language for daily requests all year, but they will get a chance to learn some more simple signs. We are also still reading to learn more about Mexico. We will focus this month on some of Mexico's famous artists and food from Mexico.

What's New in the Homeroom

In our study of Mexico in social studies, we read about Diego Rivera, a famous muralist that comes from Mexico.  To help connect with the story, we created a large mural of our own that is hanging in the classroom.

In our study of motion in science, we used marbles (spheres) to investigate how they move.  We used foam runways to help out with observing their movement.  The kids learned that they had to start the sphere higher up and end lower down in order for it to move with good "energy" (that was one of the student's words).  They also noticed that the straighter  the runway was, the faster the sphere went.  It was a great last lesson because they had to use balance, which had studied previously, to help keep their sphere on the track.

On Friday, we had our last centers and I allowed the children to pick their favorite ones from the year to repeat.  I can't believe there will be only about a week left of school!
