Current Events:

Welcome to Mrs.B's 2009-2010 classroom current events.


It is the purpose of this page to advise parents on what is happening in the school and classroom, and to provide resources to assist with the learning process.

Supplies Needed for the Beginning of School 

Please purchase and bring into class for your child’s scheduled first day:

  • One small backpack, just big enough for lunch, snacks and daily folder.  Our lockers are very small!! Please no wheels- they do not fit the lockers and will not be allowed in class.
  • One set of extra clothes- underwear, socks, shirt and pants- please put name on clear baggie (gallon size works well).  These will be kept in child’s locker.
  • One package of latex free  #2 pencils- please sharpen
  • One package of colored pencils-please sharpen
  • One package glue sticks and one bottle school glue
  • One package washable markers ( aroma free and unscented)
  • One washable water color paint set
  • One package of white board markers (aroma free and unscented)
  • One small old stuffed item, size of child’s hand, to erase marker from white board
  • One box of crayons
  • One box gallon storage bags( to share)
  • One water bottle with lid they can remove.  These will be washed at school daily and kept in the classroom.
  • One small bottle of hand sanitizer
  • One shoe box with lid -please no boot boxes. Extras are always welcomed.
  • Two empty cereal boxes- the same size please.

We provide each student with a 4x5x9 inch plastic container for their personal use of items. It is very helpful to write the students name on the items. 

Please provide/check daily:

  • Provide two small healthy snacks, one for an AM break and one for a PM snack. We are peanut free classroom.  The students that have this allergy sit at a special peanut free table in the lunchroom.  We do separate snacks at recess, so are alerted to where all sit. Reusable, recyclable containers are suggested.
  • Lunches may be purchased from the school.Home prepared lunches need to be in a container the child can open independently.  Milk is 65 cents.
  • Check and return daily the parent/school communication folder.  NEW: a reading bag will go home with an assignment- please send back the next day.
  • Apply sunscreen at home.
  • Sneakers tie shoes or Velcro shoes are safest in school and required to participate in PE.

Please save/ donate:

  • For art integration center, please save recyclable materials baby jars/formula with lids: any paper tubes: film containers: food containers: ribbons, buttons, cereal boxes, wallpaper books, magazines, jar lids, measuring items, tissue or other paper etc.
  • For the woodworking center, we accept donations of saw dust, nails and soft wood, sand paper etc.  The school provides the tools, safety glasses and safety procedures.
  • For the writing center, please save pads of paper, small note pads, sticky notes, unused envelopes, and writing tablets etc.
  • The housekeeping area could always use dress up shoes, silky dresses, ties, vests etc.
  • For the dinosaur unit please begin to save chicken bones, turkey bones and rib bones. Boiled cleaned, no meat residue, and bagged with students name on it. Freeze until requested!

Second Trimester Goals:  

MATH:  Numbers and Operations: Geometry and Measurement: Functions and Algebra: Data, Statics and Probability: Problem Solving , reasoning and proof: Communication, connections and representations.

READING:  Phonemic awareness: word ID Skills and strategies: Vocabulary: Understanding of text: Reading strategies.

WRITING:  pre-draft skills: oral communication.

SCIENCE: Participate in science inquiry: senses: Body: Space and Woodworking 

Current Assignments:

We are continually building our stamina for reading practice technique of read to self, EEKK and center selections.  The Daily Five reading program encourages and promotes student independence during instructional reading.   We also learned how to Read a Book, first by looking at the pictures and discussing each page then re ading the books words and comparing our two ways to learn about the book. 

Math curriculum program is throughly understood by the class as they prepare their individual spots with pencil, crayons and attributes needed for the lesson. We are beginning Unit 3.

 

WeeklySpecials:

We will have PE on Mondays and  Fridays with Coach F.  all participants must wear sneakers

We will enjoy music on Wednesday mornings with Mr. Matt

Speech and Language consultants are Ms. Lilly and Mrs. J.  Our assigned in class instruction will be Tuesday mornings.

Books We Are Reading: 

We are reading and partici[pating in a daily math sentence activity.  The class uses chalk boards to listen as the story discribes a number sentence.  Together we decide if the sentence is addition or subtraction and enter the appropriate symbols.

What's New in the Homeroom:

  • Learning about our senses, how our body digests foods and exploring our new science wood kit.
  • Learner about the history of our country, a Native American song and many projects that demonstrate that learning
  • As we observed and drew our shadows, we experimented with the pattern of the eart as it rotates around the sun
  • we measured, compared an apple peel from a third graders fruit
  • We have a butterfly bush with catepillars, butterflies.
  • measuring everything using a variety of devices
  • practicing Read to Self with the book bins
  • Labeling the center activities with cut out magazines
  • learning about each other
  • putting the number line up on the wall
  • learning about the value of a word wall
  • recording classroom rules, school rules and expected behavior
  • practicing center expectations for independence
  • learning the days of the week and the months of the year
  • practicing kindness, empathy and tolerance

Wishlist:

  • Old puzzle pieces to make collages 
  • Wood scraps- small bits and pieces that  can be sanded and constructed at our wood working center
  • Old magazines appropriate for children to view and cut out for different language arts projects
