Curriculum
Our Mission
"Kingston Hill Academy is dedicated to providing students with the opportunity for an inclusive, individualized, and challenging curriculum that supports them to reach their full potential."
Sponsored by the Groden Center, KHA was created to offer research based and creative educational programs for all students.
Inclusive Education – KHA seeks to educate students with disabilities within the general education curriculum. KHA is able to do this through individualized learning plans, strong collaboration and partnership between general and special education staff, and small group instruction that targets each student's individual developmental level for language arts and mathematics.
Individualized Education – For each student at KHA, an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) is developed that outlines the child's strengths and needs, areas of interest, as well as teacher, student, and family goals. These goals are established to challenge the student and promote self-esteem. Individual learning goals seek to both extend as well as delve deeper into the general curriculum. ILP goals are tracked throughout the year through open communication channels with families, parent-teacher-child conferences twice a year, staff meetings, and student portfolios.
Challenging Education – Just as KHA's small group instruction assists students who require remediation in typical school programs, small groups also allow students of all developmental levels to be appropriately challenged. Homeroom activities are designed to encourage and allow students to reach their full potential through engaging science, integrated writing, social studies and project oriented activities. In addition, approximately ½ of the KHA certified homeroom teaching staff is proficient in Spanish. All students get a chance to learn Spanish language on a weekly, and for some students daily, basis as part of the general education curriculum.
Social Skills and Relaxation – In addition to our basic mission, KHA provides social skills instruction as a school-wide approach. Teaching students stress management techniques, such as relaxation strategies and pro-social skills, help students build strong binds with adults and peers. These skills are reinforced at all grade levels.

More Information about KHA Curriculum
An outcomes-oriented curriculum insures that students are taught specific skills to mastery in each of the content areas. Data is collected using standardized assessments, curriculum based assessments, and the use of rubrics. Mastery tests are embedded in the curriculum at all levels. Students who have difficulty in any area of the curriculum are given remediation until they have mastered the skill required. In addition, portfolio data is collected to show families what the student has actually achieved.
Individual learning goals are established for each student to challenge the child and promote self-esteem. Individual learning goals seek to both extend as well as delve deeper into the curriculum. These goals are reported on throughout the school year.
A balance is sought between acquiring basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics through positive practice and feedback, and exploring these content areas through problem solving, project based learning, real world experiences, culture, and the arts.
